BC Finance Committee Releases Recommendations for Province, Includes Several Langley Chamber Priorities
August 11, 2022
The Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services released its report on the Budget 2023 Consultations today, making a number of recommendations to the provincial government on actions it should take and initiatives it should fund in the next provincial budget. Read the report here.
The Langley Chamber made a formal submission to the Committee and met with committee member and local MLA Megan Dykeman to discuss our recommendations to support Langley businesses and employers.
The Langley Chamber is pleased to see several of our priorities reflected in the final document, including our specific recommendation to review the current exemption threshold for the Employer Health Tax -- which needs to be increased -- and index it to inflation. The Langley Chamber is advocating for the Employer Health Tax payroll exemption to be lifted from $500,000 to $1,000,000, which would save businesses thousands in taxes. With inflation increasing wages and salaries, the Langley Chamber argues that a payroll-based tax like the EHT needs to be adjusted so that businesses are hit with larger tax bills.
In addition, the Langley Chamber made recommendations to increase skills training programs to help increase the supply of workers for local businesses, as well as creating more hands-on supports to help small business invest in things like marketing, export development, cybersecurity and more.
