Chamber Presents to City Council on Proposed 2026 Budget and Property Tax Increase
Chamber Presents to City Council on Proposed 2026 Budget and Property Tax Increase
This week, the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce appeared before Langley City Council to provide feedback on the City’s proposed 2026 Financial Plan, which includes a 5.82% property tax increase for the coming year. The Chamber was the only organization to present at the public meeting, reflecting our ongoing commitment to ensuring the voice of local business is represented in municipal decision-making.
In speaking to Council, the Chamber acknowledged the efforts made to reduce the proposed increase—particularly through the removal of several optional staffing additions. However, we also noted the significant cumulative impact of recent tax increases, which total more than 30% over the past three years, and emphasized the need to carefully consider affordability for both businesses and residents.
During the presentation, the Chamber offered several areas where further savings may be achievable, including:
- Reviewing the City’s expected operating surplus for 2025 and reconsidering the annual operating transfer to capital reserves in light of current economic pressures.
- Examining the impact of prolonged vacancies across departments, which have contributed to consistent annual surpluses, to determine whether all positions require full reinstatement.
- Adjusting the budgeting approach for gaming revenue, which has been higher than forecast in both 2023 and 2024. Budgeting closer to actuals could reduce the property tax increase by approximately 0.5%.
Whether through these or other efforts, the Chamber challenged Council to find additional efficiencies with the goal of bringing the 2026 tax increase below 5%.
We also expressed appreciation for the City’s transparency throughout the budget process and for the opportunity for public input at the Council meeting. The Chamber will continue to monitor the budget process and advocate for a balanced approach that supports responsible financial planning while protecting the competitiveness and vibrancy of Langley’s business community.
