City of Langley 2024 Budget -- Council Considering 9.97% Tax Increase
The City of Langley has begun its 2024 budget process with a draft budget including a 9.97% budget/property tax increase. This would be one of the highest increases we've seen this year in the region.
The majority of this increase, 5.73%, has been identified by the City as inflationary effects on existing spending, with the remainder made up of infrastructure and public safety expenses.
The Langley Chamber will be reviewing the budget in detail, along with our Government Policy Committee and Board of Directors, and will be encouraging Mayor and Council to push to find ways of reducing this substantial increase, given it follows 2023's significant increase of 11.56%. While the City maintains an competitive business-to-residential tax ration compared with other jurisdictions, it remains that business pay significantly more in taxes despite using fewer City resources, and for some businesses property taxes is one of their largest single expenditures.
The City maintains a robust engagement and consultation process for the Budget, and the Langley Chamber encourages members to participate directly. Read more about the budget and the upcoming Budget Open House below.
