Crime Resource: Tips for Preventing Loitering on Business Property

Loitering on your commercial property, whether it’s an apartment complex, office building, or otherwise, is never a good thing.

Loiterers can trash your parking lot, graffiti your walls, and send the wrong signal to customers. So how can you discourage loitering on your property?

There are a few simple steps you can take – ones that you might already be doing – in order to help deter people from loitering around your commercial property:

  • Call 604-532-3200 and request a free CPTED Review (Crime Prevention through Environmental Design) from RCMP Community Policing Team to help limit the opportunities for crime around your premises
  • Natural Surveillance: Keeping people and their activities where they can be observed
  • Put up signage to indicate “No Loitering/Trespassing” as well as time-based limitations on parking
  • Install video monitoring systems
  • Keep parking lots clean and well maintained and remove graffiti
  • Report issues by calling the non-emergency line at 604-532-3200
