Retail sales increased 0.7% to $72.1 billion in February. Sales were up in seven of nine subsectors, led by increases at motor vehicle and parts dealers.
Building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers and Furniture, electronics and appliances retailers were the only sectors to see sales declines in February month over month.
Those are national numbers, however, which mask flat BC numbers (with a -0.4% decline in retail sales in BC in February) and a higher decline (of -1.2%) in the Vancouver region.
With national gains in January and February and another increase signalled for March, retail activity is on track for a solid first quarter, supported in part by earlier price relief and resilient nominal spending. However, the composition of growth and weak volume gains suggest underlying demand remains fragile.
As energy-driven inflation pressures amid rising oil prices and Middle East tensions begin to build alongside a cooling labour market, real purchasing power is likely to come under renewed strain, making the outlook beyond Q1 increasingly uncertain.
