"Destructive and Disappointing" - Langley Chamber Responds to Announcement of US Tariffs

February 1, 2025 – The Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce is deeply disappointed by the announcement of new 25% tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian goods. These tariffs will disrupt supply chains, increase costs for businesses and consumers, and put jobs at risk on both sides of the border. For Langley businesses—many of which depend on trade with U.S. customers and suppliers—this decision creates significant economic uncertainty and challenge.
As a border community, we know the importance and value of the Canada-U.S. trade relationship -- one of the most fair, successful, deeply integrated in the world. These destructive and counter-productive tariffs imposed by the USA jeopardize this relationship, hurting businesses on both sides that have spent decades working together successfully through predictable trade policies.
We support the federal and provincial governments as they act to act to defend Canada’s economic interests and respond to these tariffs with retaliatory measures, while knowing this will cause challenges to businesses who use American inputs and suppliers. In addition, the Langley Chamber also urges the federal government to create a path to a resolution by addressing the concerns surrounding border security raised in President Trump’s Executive Order. Canada may need to create the 'off-ramp' for both countries to exit this trade way.
Beyond these direct responses, we also implore our governments to act to support businesses impacted by these tariffs, including by breaking down interprovincial trade barriers, by helping business to diversify their export markets, by exploring direct financial supports to impacted businesses, and by ensuring existing and future government policies and regulations do not further burden business activity.
The Langley Chamber of Commerce will continue to advocate on behalf of our 1,100+ members and the broader business community, working with our partners at the BC Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce to ensure our concerns are heard at all levels of government, both here and in the United States, as well as developing, sharing and delivering content, resources and information to support our local business community during this time
