Extension Allows International Students to Continue Working More than 20 Hours Per Week with Langley Businesses

Following advocacy and engagement for several months by the Langley Chamber with the federal government, the Chamber is pleased with today's announcement that international students will continue to be allowed to work up to full time with local businesses until April 30, 2024.

International students have long been limited to 20-hours a week of work off-campus, but that cap was lifted last year to help these students fill persistent job vacancies in our community.  The Langley Chamber has been advocating for extending this, as we know several Langley businesses for which international students are important members of their workforce.

Today, the federal government announced the waiver on the 20-hour-per-week limit on the number of hours international students are allowed to work off campus while class is in session will be extended to April 30, 2024 for international students already in Canada, as well as applicants who have already submitted an application for a study permit as of December 7, 2023.

The Langley Chamber will continue to engage with our members on what should happen after April 30, and how best international students can support local labour needs.
