Langley Chamber Hosts Ministry of Finance Briefing on PST Expansion
The Langley Chamber recently hosted an online briefing with the BC Ministry of Finance to help businesses better understand the upcoming expansion of Provincial Sales Tax to certain professional services.
The PST expansion is scheduled to take effect on October 1, 2026, and will affect a number of service sectors, including accounting and bookkeeping, architecture, engineering and geoscience, security, and non-residential real estate services.
While the Langley Chamber continues to oppose the PST expansion and remains concerned about the added cost and administrative burden it will place on businesses, we also believe it is important that affected members have access to clear and practical information.
The session was designed to help businesses understand what the changes may mean for them, including which services will be impacted, when and how businesses may need to register, how PST should be collected and remitted, and what exemptions or exceptions may apply.
Ministry representatives provided an overview of the new rules and shared guidance on key areas such as registration requirements, invoicing and billing, when PST becomes payable, and where businesses can access additional resources and support.
For many professional service providers, the expansion will create new compliance responsibilities and operational considerations. Businesses may need to update internal systems, adjust invoicing practices, review client contracts, and ensure staff understand how and when PST applies.
The Chamber will continue to advocate against policies that increase costs, complexity, and uncertainty for BC businesses. We remain focused on ensuring government understands the practical impacts this tax expansion will have on employers, professionals, and clients across our business community.
The Langley Chamber encourages any business that may be affected to review the available resources, seek professional guidance where needed, and begin preparing before the new rules take effect.
