Langley Chamber's Government Policy Committee Meets with Highway 1 Expansion Project Team

Transportation is a key priority for the Langley Chamber and the Highway 1 corridor is of provincial and national importance, providing direct and indirect economic benefits and facilitating the movement of goods, people and services. However, population and business growth south of the Fraser and in the Fraser Valley have overburdened Highway 1, resulting in heavy congestion, safety implications, and challenging our ability to effectively move goods and services into and out of the region.

Highway 1 is currently being expanded as part of a multi-section project, and the Langley Chamber's Government Policy Committee recently met with the expansion project team to get an update on the current phase -- widening from 216th to 264th -- and to get information on when the critical final phase would begin including a replacement for the 264th overpass and widening through to Abbotsford.

The current phase of the expansion is expected to go to tender imminently, with construction slated for early 2024 through late 2025.  This phase will see the extension of the 3rd lane (HOV) from 216th through to 264th in both directions, and will replace the 232nd overpass and the CN rail overpass with new, improved structures, improving traffic flows and providing greater clearance for trucks passing underneath.

The critical 264th to Whatcom Road portion will see its plan released in the coming months, outlining the details of this final piece of the expansion this summer.  The Langley Chamber will then engaged directly with the project team and the Ministry of Transportation on the project's scope and timelines to ensure it meets the needs of businesses, especially those in the Gloucester industrial district.
