The Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce continues to be a strong voice for local businesses in the media. This past week, Chamber CEO Cory Redekop joined Jill Bennett on CKNW to talk about the sudden Canada Post strike and the impact of the BCGEU labour dispute on businesses across our region.
On Canada Post, Redekop highlighted the frustration of businesses caught in yet another disruption to essential services: “We can’t seem to run a national postal service, so I say either get on with it, or get out of the way.” He pointed out that Canada Post should at least deliver the mail already in the system rather than freezing it in place: “If the bus drivers go on strike, they don’t lock the bus with you still in it.”
Turning to the BCGEU strike and the closure of the liquor distribution system, Redekop underlined the impact on restaurants, pubs, and retailers: “Using a restaurant or a bar as leverage doesn’t sit well with me when I know how hard they are working.”
The Chamber emphasized that while labour disputes are part of a functioning economy, the unpredictability and sudden shutdowns place disproportionate strain on businesses that are already navigating high costs, weak demand, and workforce challenges. The Langley Chamber will continue to advocate for more balanced labour rules and business continuity protections, ensuring essential services don’t grind to a halt in the middle of disputes.
