Langley Chamber Welcomes Latest Highway 1 Expansion Progress
The Langley Chamber is welcoming news that the replacement of the CPKC rail overpass on Highway 1 between 216th Street and 264th Street is moving forward, with construction to begin this summer.
For Langley businesses, residents, commuters, and goods movers, this is an important step in improving one of the most critical transportation corridors in British Columbia.
Improving Safety, Reliability, and Goods Movement
The existing rail overpass has long been a constraint along this stretch of Highway 1. The new overpass will provide increased height clearance for commercial vehicles. The new structure will help reduce the likelihood of future crashes while also allowing for additional lanes on Highway 1, including new HOV lanes in each direction.
For businesses, this matters because reliable transportation is not just about commute times. It affects deliveries, employees, customers, supply chains, and the overall competitiveness of the Fraser Valley economy.
Part of a Larger Highway 1 Expansion
The overpass replacement is part of Phase 2 of the Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program, which includes approximately 10 kilometres of improvements between 216th Street and 264th Street.
Phase 2 includes adding new highway capacity, replacing the 232nd Street interchange, replacing the CPKC rail overpass, and supporting better safety and traffic flow through this key section of the corridor. This phase is currently under construction.
Work is also underway on Phase 3A, which includes approximately 13 kilometres of improvements between 264th Street and Mt. Lehman Road. This phase includes new HOV and truck lanes, replacement of the 264th Street overpass, and a new transit hub at 264th Street to service the Gloucester district.
Together, these projects represent a major investment in the future of the Fraser Valley’s transportation network.
Why This Matters for Langley Business and the Chamber
Highway 1 is the backbone of movement through Langley and the Fraser Valley. It connects workers to jobs, customers to businesses, and goods to markets.
As Langley continues to grow, transportation infrastructure needs to keep pace. Congestion, unreliable travel times, and bottlenecks create real costs for business. They make it harder to move products, attract workers, serve customers, and support continued investment in the region.
The Langley Chamber has long advocated for Highway 1 improvements and has consistently urged the federal and provincial governments to make this corridor a priority.
