Recap: Chamber Hosts Retail Sector Discussion Ahead of Black Friday and Holiday Season
The Langley Chamber welcomed members this week for our November Dinner Meeting which featured an update on BC's retail environment and a panel discussion with three local retail business leaders. Greg Wilson, Director of Government Relations (BC) with the Retail Council of Canada, opened the evening with an overview of the broader trends shaping the sector, including shifting consumer expectations, impacts of crime, and the changing dynamics of in-store and online shopping.
Following the presentation, attendees heard first-hand insights from three Langley-based retailers: Angie Quaale (Well Seasoned Gourmet Food Store), Sonya Perkins (Forever Yours Lingerie), and Sean Weatherly (Otter Co-op). Each shared their experiences navigating a complex retail landscape—from supply chain challenges and inflationary pressures to customer engagement and the realities of running a business in a fast-changing marketplace. Their perspectives reinforced the strength, creativity, and resilience of Langley’s retail community in the face of a challenging and chaotic year.
As the discussion made clear, local retailers continue to play a central role in our economy. They create jobs, contribute to community life, and provide the products and services that residents rely on every day. With the holiday season approaching—and Black Friday around the corner—it is an important reminder of the impact that local spending has here in Langley.
One of the easiest ways to support Langley businesses is by using the Langley Business Directory, our online, searchable directory of more than 1,200 local companies. Whether you are looking for retail, services, trades, hospitality, or specialty products, the directory offers a simple way to find and support businesses in our community.
We encourage residents, employers, and Chamber members to consider local options first this season. Shopping locally strengthens our economy, supports jobs, and helps ensure the long-term success of Langley’s diverse retail sector.
Explore the directory at LangleyBusinessDirectory.com and make local part of your holiday plans this year.
