Updates to Allowable Work Hours for International Students
Updates to Allowable Work Hours for International Students
The Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce is committed to keeping our members informed about regulatory changes that impact our local businesses. An update this week from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) concerns the work hours of international students. The federal government has announced the end of the temporary policy that allowed international students to work more than 20 hours per week off-campus. As of April 30, 2024, international students can work only 20 hours per week in local businesses. They will remain able to work up to full-time during scheduled academic breaks (like summer).
This change directly affects businesses employing international students and those who might typically hire them. Starting this Fall, the government plans to increase the allowable work hours to 24 hours per week.
The Langley Chamber knows local businesses often include international students in their workforce as employees, and had advocated to the federal Minister to allow for greater hours for international students. Read our advocacy here >
We will continue to provide updates as more details become available, ensuring that our business community is informed of changes which may impact hiring and employee retention.
