Cracking the Code on Batterers: Understanding Motives & Connection to Risk
On February 5th, 2014 the Provincial Government announced a new Provincial Domestic Violence Plan as part of a commitment to make British Columbia a safer place for women, children and anyone affected by domestic violence. Following on this initiative, WJS Canada is pleased to bring this 1 day presentation focused on ending family violence, facilitated by Steve and Dorthy Halley of Halley Counseling Services, leaders in the field of batterer intervention for nearly 20 years. This presentation will create a new and better understanding of different types of batterers, their motives, behaviours and the dangers they present to their victim and their community. Unlock the mystery of domestic violence, and gain practical information that will change and improve your response. Multidisciplinary Audience: law enforcement, criminal justice professionals, mental health practitioners, shelter workers, advocates, batterer intervention providers, and all domestic violence professionals. This presentation ?cracks the code? on batterers? behavior for advocates, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, judges, and other criminal justice professionals?providing an understanding of types of batterers based on motive. Participants will learn how batterers with different motives create different dangers under different circumstances. Audio-visual will be utilized to illustrate the different motivations and risks. Application of this perspective can lead to improved decision-making among professionals and a higher level of safety for victims of domestic violence. The participant will learn to: *Identify the different types of batterers, based on motive. *Identify the different risks and lethality factors linked with the different batterer motive types. *Understand the link between different motives and effective response and programming. *Apply the ?Motivation Questionnaire Checklist? and ?Risk Factor Checklist? to specific scenarios to enhance professional response. *Identify the link between motive of those who batter and human trafficking Dorthy Stucky Halley, LMSW, is the director of the Victim Services Division of the Office of Attorney General Derek Schmidt, and an expert on domestic violence dynamics and batterers. Halley?s development of a motivation typology for those who batter has opened the door to a new understanding of domestic violence for judges, prosecutors, law enforcement officers, advocates, and others working in the domestic violence field. This typology continues to gain recognition. In 2015, Halley provided a presentation about her motivation typology to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. In addition to her work on domestic violence, Halley organized the development of the Attorney General?s Human Trafficking Advisory Board in Kansas, and served as the first Coordinator. She continues to serve on this board, and chair the Victim Services Subcommittee. For her latest publication, Halley co-authored the chapter ?Providing Effective Services to Victims of Human Trafficking: Theoretical, Practical, and Ethical Considerations? in the book Human Trafficking: A Multidisciplinary Approach, 2014. She has provided more than 1000 presentations on an international, national, state, and local level to more than 20,000 people on batterer intervention, domestic violence, human trafficking, and other topics regarding victimization. Steven M.S. Halley, LSCSW, is the clinical director of Halley Counseling Services, P.A. and the Director of the Family Peace Initiative (FPI). For the past 25 years Halley has worked as a wilderness counselor, probation officer, therapist, and batterer intervention provider. His success in understanding and working with those who batter has created high demand for his consultation in new initiatives. He is currently working with the Kansas Department of Corrections, developing their first batterer intervention program within the prison setting, and providing additional innovative programming with the female prison population. He is most recognized by those in the field for his workshop ?The Art of Facilitation?, as it takes the practitioner to a new level of expertise in group facilitation.
