Latest Update on Looming Canada Post Strike
Canada Post has received strike notices from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers which puts the union in a legal strike position as of 12:01am on tomorrow morning, November 15. At that time, the union may or may not take job action, or the employer may implement a lockout as they will be in a position to do so.
Canada Post is expecting a rotating strike at this point, which means service will be halted in some parts of the country and in some areas of the system, but mail service may continue in others, albeit with significant delays. That said, the union may implement a more fulsome strike, meaning mail services would be halted altogether.
Similarly to the recent port strike, the Langley Chamber has asked the federal minister to intervene to ensure services remain operational while the parties negotiate.
This issue matters because mail is used by many businesses to send invoices or receive payments, as cheques remain the most commonly-accepted form of payment for Canadian businesses. Canada Post is also used widely by retailers to deliver products and purchases to consumers, and a disruption as we head into the holiday shopping season and Black Friday would be a challenge for many of them.
