We are pleased to invite you to our October Dinner Meeting as we celebrate Small Business Month. We are pleased to host keynote speaker, Michael J. Weiler of KSW Lawyers, as he discusses the rising costs and obstacles that small and mid-size enterprises (SME) are facing and offers ideas on how to keep the costs down with employees.
Employees are your greatest assets—just ask the Vancouver Canucks. But managing employees in a complicated regulatory and judicial world can impose significant unanticipated expenses on SME’s not the least of which can be legal fees. With over 40 years of advising and acting for SME’s, Mike has seen how these expenses can impair the growth of the SME. He also knows how businesses can take steps to minimize these costs.
Keynote speaker, Michael J. Weiler, will offer some practical advice and tips on how to keep the costs of managing the employment relationship in check. He will use anecdotal examples that will help demonstrate the pitfalls but also the solutions.
- Minimize the risks of a problem employee by honing your hiring practices.
- Minimize the risks of a wrongful dismissal by having enforceable written employment agreements.
- Consider the options in dealing with an employee on a medical leave to avoid a human rights complaint.
- Learn how to comply with the Employment Standards Act.
- Finally prepare your operation to best avoid a union organizing drive.
Mike Weiler is senior counsel with the Employment & Labour Group at KSW Lawyers (Kane Shannon Weiler LLP).
